"The 'Invisible Guardian' in Feed: An In-Depth Analysis of the National Standards for 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3"

Introduction:

In livestock and poultry breeding, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 is hailed as the "golden key" to animal health. But did you know that behind such a tiny additive lies a complex competition of standards? From China to the United States, from testing technologies to standard differences, how do different standards affect feed quality? Today, we unlock the "standard code" of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 and take you to understand the rigorous rules behind the industry!

I. Feed Additive Standards: A Tripartite Competition Among China, the EU and the US

As a feed additive product, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 is governed by different standards in various countries:

1. China: Upcoming industry standard to regulate product quality

Standard NY/T 4688-2025 will be implemented on May 1, 2025, and the full text can be inquired through the "National Agricultural and Food Standards Public Service Platform". The requirements are as follows:

Physicochemical indicators: Assay ≥ 94.0%, single impurity ≤ 1.0% (pre-excluded), moisture 3.8~5.0%

Hygienic indicators: Total arsenic ≤ 2mg/kg; heavy metals ≤ 20mg/kg

2. United States: LC-MS/MS testing and ppb-level limit requirements

The latest version was issued on March 20, 2025, under Regulation 21 CFR Part 573, which can be inquired at www.ecfr.gov. The requirements are as follows:

Physicochemical indicators: Assay ≥ 94%, any single sterol (single impurity) ≤ 1%, solvent residue ≤ 1.0%, no detectable tetraiodofluorescein (erythrosine), 1,25-(OH)2-D3 (calcitriol) ≤ 1ppb.

Hygienic indicators: Lead ≤ 20ppm; aluminum ≤ 20ppm

3. European Union: Thresholds for preparation processes

The latest version was issued on April 12, 2024 (Regulation (EC) 2024/1070), which can be inquired at ec.europa.eu. The requirements are as follows:

Physicochemical indicators: Assay > 94%, single sterol (single impurity) ≤ 1%, erythrosine < 5mg/kg.

The standard stipulates that only 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 prepared using the strain numbered CBS146008 is allowed to be marketed and sold in the EU market.

II. Corporate Survival Thinking Under Global Competition

  1. Process upgrading: With the continuous emergence of technologies such as AI, synthetic biology, and green chemistry, on the basis of meeting different standards, how to build cost competitiveness through process improvement and breakthroughs is an eternal topic.
  2. Standard localization: There are "invisible thresholds" behind regional standards. Meeting regional standards and customer requirements is another demonstration of corporate strength.
  3. Industrial chain extension: From multi-dimensional products to single feed additives, from preparations to raw materials and upstream starting materials, the extended layout of the industrial chain is a necessary condition for ensuring stable supply, quality and price of products.

Conclusion:

The "standards" of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 are not static. The differences in standards among countries and regions are not only a competition of technologies, but also a competition of markets. Both users and manufacturers can only enhance their competitiveness and seize market opportunities by keeping up with standard updates and scientifically understanding different standards.
